The Ultimate Ears Megablast is by far UE’s loudest and smartest speaker, compact, light and well-designed, they deliver big sound for their smaller size and are well suited for outdoor use. As with all Amazon’s Echo devices, in order to use Alexa you have to be connected to reliable Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot. You get access to the more than 25,000 amazingly handy skills available for Alexa, among the best includes the ability to control smart-home products.
Alexa voice control is a bonus feature, but we adore this easy to travel speaker’s fun, robust, and admirably controlled performance most of all.
The MegaBlast is very similar to the popular Boom 2, but according to UE the Megablast has been completely redesigned from the “ground up” and is specially equipped with new drivers that deliver enhanced sound quality with a top volume that’s 40 percent louder than the Megaboom. The Megablast portable waterproof wi-fi and bluetooth speaker weighs in at 2.8 pounds or 1.3kg, while the smaller Blast has a scale weight of 1.4 pounds or 0.64kg. That’s two times the difference for those keeping score.
Despite being designed light weight and portable, there has been a conscious effort to make the Megablast more home-friendly – due mostly to smart technology integration.
Charging can be done directly with the charging cord plugged into the unit. However, users must be aware of the downside to not buying the Power Up charging base. Accessing the USB charging port can be a pain. The speakers have a threaded tripod mount on the top, which is a nice addition, but you have to unscrew and take off the flap (which keeps moisture out) to access the charging port. If you plan on using these primarily inside your home, It might be a good idea to consider purchasing the charging base, which adds some bucks to the total price of the speaker.
A Bluetooth speaker and a smart home speaker together can prove to be a fantastic combination– it eliminates the need to have two devices where one could be sufficient. Ultimate Ears is a leader in smart speaker technology.
Performance and Durability
UE Megablast is the smart home speaker wonderful fit for young families. It’s multifunctional and its rugged design means it can take the inevitable wear and tear and potential beating that it will get from being in a home with a young child.
App LimitationsA notable issue and potential drawback with the Megablast is that unlike the original Echo speaker generations it doesn’t support popular music streaming apps like Spotify and Apple Music – you’re pretty much limited to Amazon Music service. It’s still possible to use these services over a Bluetooth connection but there’s no ability use Alexa for voice control.
Linking Among Devices
Noted future updates will include speaker linking. Currently, it’s not possible to link your Ultimate Ears MEGABLAST portable waterproof wi-fi and bluetooth speaker to any other Ultimate Ears device. Linking is possible with earlier Ultimate Ears models and is a big advantage that Sonos systems have. Fortunately, Ultimate Ears has said that it’ll make networking possible in a future software update.
It’s somewhat hard to view the Megablast an exact Amazon Echo replacement out of the box as it is necessary that you purchase the sold-separately Power Up dock to truly recreate the Echo experience. This dock connects a silver D-ring on the base of the speaker as it establishes a charge. Be mindful that it won’t work with the D-ring on the Boom or Megaboom speakers.
As far as sound quality, the Megablast delivers excellent 360-degree sound. It is equipped to filled the space in every room we test with sound. When used outdoors, it didn’t struggle with the higher output at all. There was no sound distortion at higher volumes. This is in part thanks to the addition of two quality tweeters which make it more able than previous Ultimate Ears speakers to deliver well-rounded high-frequency sounds.
Largely, the Ultimate Ears MEGABLAST Portable Waterproof Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Speaker feels like a device with some smarts rather than an outright smart speaker, which is not a bad thing . Ultimate Ears ultimately made it’s name being a speaker brand and with the Megablast it’s done a good job jumping into the smart speaker arena. Having great sound, solid build, great looks and a stable Bluetooth connectivity makes this device mostly a winner.
